Local Educator Goes T

o Washington

Erin Menard, a teacher at Emolior Academy in West Farms, was selected from a group of more than 300 applicants to attend the Library of Congress’ Teaching with Primary Sources Summer Teaching Institute taking place in Washington D.C. from Monday, July 31 to Friday, August 4.

The program is designed to help teachers use primary source documents, like the millions that are archived at the Library of Congress, to enrich lessons related to a variety of subjects.

The educators will learn more about using primary source material in the classroom, and about the million of original documents that are digitized and on the Library’s website and available for study.

Erin is the daughter of Earl Menard of Morris Park.

Dignauris Garcia of the borough received a B.S. degree in Biology during Hobart and William Smith Colleges 2017 commencement exercises on Sunday, May 14.

Garcia is the child of David Garcia and Maria Pichardo, and studied abroad in Queensland, Australia while at the school, located in Geneva, N.Y.

This year’s commencement marked the 106th for William Smith and 192nd for Hobart. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, spoke at the commencement and received an honorary degree.

Clinton’s speech urged the graduates to work towards inclusion, embrace diversity and accepting a life not of final victories or great tragedy but of permanent possibility.
