New charters, new options for parents

Bronx parents looking for school choices now have even more charters to choose from.

Nine new charter schools for students from kindergarten to high school, will open in the borough this September, each with their own theme and and innovative methods.

The Children’s Aid Society Community Charter School in Morrisania is accepting kindergarten and first grade students through a lottery for students traditionally the most at-risk, said Children’s Aid Society CEO Richard Buery.

The school will provide on-site medical, dental, and mental-health services, and support services for families, removing barriers to learning that can include household instability.

Meanwhile, at New Visions Charter High School for Math and Science II on the Jane Addams campus, principal Stacey King will build on work already done at the first New Visions school, and a sister school for the humanities, that opened at the Kennedy High School campus in the 2011-2012 school year.

The school will offer a more specialized classes in math and science than normally found in district schools when the 11th and 12th grades are added, said New Visions’ spokesman Tim Farrell.

Heketi Community Charter School in Mott Haven, whose name comes from the Taino Native American word for “one,” focuses on multilingual literacy and integrating families, school staff, and community members to build a culture of achievement, according to its website.
