Fieldston’s season ends in Long Island

Early foul trouble and hot shooting by Long Island Lutheran finally put an end to a fantastic year for Fieldston.

The host Eagles fell 62-35 to Long Island Lutheran in the NYSAISAA Class B girls’ basketball championship Sunday afternoon at home in the Bronx.

“We had a great season, though,” coach Rock Rosa said. “We accomplished one of our goals of becoming the Ivy League Champs which has never been done before [at Fieldston].”

The second-seeded Eagles led, 12-9, late in the first quarter before No. 1 Long Island Lutheran tied the score with a 3-pointer heading into the second quarter.

Freshman forward Kalijah Terilli and junior guard Jacqueline Schoninger both picked up their second foul early in the second quarter and Fieldston never recovered. From there Long Island Lutheran started to beat Fieldston’s defensive pressure and began hitting its shots to take a 31-17, halftime lead.

“They played good defense, but we just couldn’t buy a basket in the second quarter,” Rosa said.

Alli Herschlein scored 17 points and Sam Millhaven had seven of her eight points and Taylor Brown scored five of her eight during a 19-5 second quarter for Lutheran (21-5), which plays the PSAL Class B winner in the first round of the state Federation tournament on March 27. Brittany Thompson scored 11 points and Laura Blackwell added 10 points for Fieldston (20-6).
