The Bronx Economic Development Corporation is encouraging restaurants to participate in Savor the Bronx, a restaurant week hosted by sister organization the Bronx Tourism Council and Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson’s office.
To “soft launch” the restaurant week, which is taking place from Feb. 18-23, the BXEDC hosted a panel of restaurant experts recently at 1010 WINS studios to have a “culinary conversation.”
Richard Berroa of Claudy’s Kitchen, Valerio Coletta of Porto Salvo, Alyssa Tucker of the Belmont Business Improvement District (BID) and Andrew Rigie of the New York City Hospitality Alliance all participated in the panel, breaking down their experiences in the restaurant scene and talking about how Savor the Bronx will prompt New Yorkers to try new eateries.
The restaurant week will hopefully encourage people to recognize the incredible food options available in the Bronx. Such attractions include Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognized Peruvian restaurant Claudy’s Kitchen, and Porto Salvo, a beloved Italian seafood place just up the street from Yankee Stadium.
When asked about preparing for the upcoming restaurant week, Rigie advised participating restaurant owners to expect people in and out of the Bronx community to be interested in getting a taste of the borough. The restaurant week has the potential to increase foot traffic in the Bronx and dollars spent in a small business.
“It’s an opportunity to show your best face, and it’s just another way to get people out to support local businesses,” Rigie said.
In the same vein, Tucker pointed out that Bronx restaurants are a home away from home for many people — particularly in the Belmont BID, where Arthur Avenue is. She also sees a lot of Bronx Zoo and Botanical Garden visitors at the BID’s restaurants. This is something to keep in mind if you are thinking about having your restaurant be a part of the restaurant week.
During this conversation, Berroa also mentioned that the success of Claudy’s Kitchen is in part due to a BXEDC loan. Restaurant owners: keep in mind that this is not only an opportunity to attract new customers but also form a relationship with the BXEDC and learn about how the organization can help you.
