Bronx Community College held its 48th annual “Run the Bronx” to help promote health and wellness in the borough on Saturday, May 2.

In addition to encouraging physical activity to help improve health outcomes among residents of the borough, this annual event also honors its founder, Dr. Roscoe C. Brown, a former Tuskegee Airman and the third president of Bronx Community College. Brown founded Run the Bronx in 1978, with the event now widely believed to be the second-oldest footrace in New York City.

This year’s run also honored former longtime Bronx Community College Professor Henry Skinner, who died last June. He co-founded Run the Bronx with Dr. Brown and Bronx Community College alumnus Joe Ramos.

Skinner spent 49 years as part of the school’s Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He was also given the BCC Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award and recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives for his lifelong commitment to education and service in the South Bronx.
