Hello readers and welcome to another edition of Around Town!

U.S. Navy Warrior

A borough native used lessons he learned growing up to gain admittance to the prestigious Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, RI.

Lt. Carlos Maldonado said he learned mental toughness, discipline and respect growing up in the Bronx.

Those values helped him to rise from being a machinist’s mate when he enlisted 11 years ago to being an officer.

Surface Warfare Officers first train and are groomed at the Surface Warriors Officers School, which has a mission to ready sea-bound warriors to serve as surface combatants as officers, enlisted engineers, and enlisted navigation professionals to fulfill the Navy’s mission maintaining global maritime superiority.

New Chamber President

Lisa Sorin is the new president of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce. She starts her new position on Friday, December 14.

She served as the executive director of the Westchester Square Business Improvement District for six years, during a period in which the Square saw a major revitalization.

Sorin has been a chamber board member for more than 12 years.

Her experience and knowledge in working with Bronx businesses will guide the growth of the chamber and its membership, said Joe Kelleher, Bronx Chamber of Commerce chairman.
