Bronx Fashionistas, get ready. T.J. Maxx is coming to Fordham Plaza.
The 30,503 square foot designer department store will hold its grand opening from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 24.
The chain is one of the nation’s largest discount retailers, with about 1,000 stores in operation, and offers fashion and accessories for the family and the home, jewelry, and beauty and pet accessories.
“I think they’ll be a great addition to the area,” said Daniel Bernstein deputy director of the Fordham Road Business Improvement District. “I know that Fordham Plaza hasn’t had a big retail component and I think that store in particular will add that element.”
The new location at Fordham Plaza will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.
As part of the grand opening, reusable shopping bags will be given to the first 1,000 customers.
“We are pleased to expand our store base to Bronx, delivering value and an exciting selection of fashion to serve the needs of customers,” said Richard Sherr, president of T.J.Maxx. “With thousands of new items from top designers and brands arriving in each store every week from around the world, shoppers will discover a completely new store full of amazing values every time they visit.”
The grand opening comes just as the city Department of Design and Construction has started on its reconstruction project of the plaza at 4750 Third Avenue and surrounding streets.
Construction will be done in several phases and includes a redesign of the plaza’s transit hub, road and sewer repairs, tree planting, landscaping and more.
The affected areas are bordered by E. Fordham road to the north, E. 188th St. to the south, Third Ave. to the east and Webster Ave. to the west.
The goal of the project is to improve traffic flow in the busy transportation hub and is expected to be complete by Spring 2014.
The BID’s Bernstein said he thinks the new store “will make a big impact when all of the construction and everything is complete.”
“It’s a big transportation hub, so a lot of people will be attracted to the retail,” said Bernstein, “and it will become more of an appealing destination.”Kirsten Sanchez can be reach via e-mail at ksanchez@c
