A 23-year-old cyclist was fatally struck in the south Bronx last week, police announced earlier this morning.

Ivan Morales was travelling southbound in the bicycle lane on Willis Avenue when he collided with a 2013 Lexus sedan in the intersection of E. 138th Street at about 7:45 p.m. on Friday June, 5, according to the NYPD’s collision investigation squad.

Morales was brought to nearby Lincoln Hospital, suffering from “severe head and body injuries” which he had succumbed to on Monday, June 8, according to police.

The 62-year-old driver remained at the scene and a police investigation is ongoing at this time. A Streetsblog report said that police did not say whether the driver or the cyclist ran a red light.

The same report said that this is the fifth cyclist killed at this intersection in 2020. Last year, there were a total of 23 crashes at the intersection.
