Mitchell Silver, the Parks Department commissioner held a ceremony for the opening of Orchard Beach just before the Memorial Day weekend start to the beach season on Wednesday, May 20. Silver was joined at the annual event by Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene and Ken Kearns, Community Board 10 district manger, as well as parks department employees. Children from P.S. 72 in Throggs Neck joined in the festivities, at one point, playing on the clean beach sand.
