Merchant rescues Clinton

By Zach Braziller

On his way to Columbus HS for his DeWitt Clinton football team’s opening-round playoff game, Howard Langley told an assistant coach he hoped the Governors would be tested.

He got his wish, and much more.

No. 4 Clinton, in fact, trailed No. 13 Flushing late in the fourth quarter before Alanzo Merchant scored on a 17-yard touchdown run with 1:30 remaining to cap a tougher-than-expected, 22-19 win in a PSAL City Championship division game in The Bronx. The Governors will host No. 5 Curtis, a 24-8 winner over No. 12 Lehman, Saturday at noon in the quarterfinals.
