GHI Bronx Tennis Classic transforms Crotona Park

Visitors to Crotona Park in the Bronx will have a chance to see future Andy Roddicks, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapovas, and Roger Federers at the GHI Bronx Tennis Classic presented by Panasonic which takes place from Saturday, August 9 through Sunday, August 17. The tournament which is sanctioned by the USTA and organized by the New York Junior Tennis League offers $50,000 grand prizes each to the men’s and women’s winners.

The tournament begins two weeks prior to the start of the U.S. Open and is the equivalent of AAA level professional baseball. Fourteen of the current top 50 ATP and WTA men’s and women’s singles players are GHI Bronx Tennis Classic alumni including Richard Gasquet of France (#15), Anna Chakvetadze of Russia (#8), Ivo Karlovic of Argentina (#21), Daniella Hantuchova of China (#12) and Francesca Schiavone of Italy (#20).

Play begins on Saturday, August 9 at 9 a.m., Sunday, August 10 at 10 a.m. and Monday August 11 through Sunday August 17 at 11 a.m.  The championship match is scheduled to begin at 11am.  Admission to the outer court matches during the week is free.  There is a featured center court match daily at 5 p.m. For the finals general admission seats are $10; shaded box seats are $25.  Tickets are available by  calling (347) 417-8151.

All proceeds from the GHI Bronx Tennis Classic benefit the New York Junior Tennis League (NYJTL) which provides free tennis and educational programs to New York City youth reaching more than 100,000 children each year.  Its programs encompass all skill levels and can be found in a variety of urban settings including school gyms, schoolyards, community centers and parks.
