In honor of Black History Month, WHEDco’s Bronx Music Heritage Center celebrated Ghana’s connection to the Civil Rights Movement and the decades of shared history between the U.S. and Ghana with traditional music and dance from the African nation. The event featured K5!, a dance group that highlights Ghanaian culture, performing traditional Ghanaian Azonto dance. The documentary Living the Hiplife, which is directed by Jesse Weaver Shipley and depicts the musical fusion of Ghana’s highlife music and hip hop, was shown and discussed.
