The number of reported rapes across the Bronx increased significantly during the 28-day period ending Sept. 29, compared to the same period last year, according to the NYPD’s latest crime stats. However, a large drop in vehicle thefts occurred for the same time frame.
Rapes in the Bronx were up 68.2% for the 28-day period through Sept. 28, compared to last year—from 22 reported cases to 37.
The biggest jump in reported rapes was seen within the confines of the 46th Precinct, which covers Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights and Mount Hope. Reported cases in the precinct rose from zero for the 28-day period last year to five this year.
Over the same period, vehicle thefts plummeted across the borough. There was a 15.9% decrease, from 403 in 2023 to 339 in 2024.
This drop in vehicle thefts was particularly notable within the confines of the 49th Precinct, which covers Allerton, Morris Park, Van Nest, Pelham Parkway, Eastchester Gardens and Pelham Gardens. Reported cases there fell from 43 last year to 29 this year.
Year-over-year, the total number of reported major crimes for the 28-day period ending Sept. 29 – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and vehicle thefts – was flat compared to last year. There was a 0.55% increase, from 2,365 for the 28-day period in 2023 to 2,378 in 2024.
For the year through Sept. 29, major crimes are up slightly compared to the nine-month period in 2023. Year-over-year, through Sept. 29, there has been a 1.27% increase in major crimes across the Bronx, from 22,369 in 2023 to 22,654 in 2024.
