The number of reported rapes across the Bronx more than doubled during the 28-day period ending Dec. 1, compared to the same period of time last year, according to the NYPD’s latest crime stats.

There was a 122.2% spike in rapes across the Bronx year-over-year, from 18 cases in 2023 to 40 in 2024. Eight of the 12 precincts in the borough saw cases rise from the previous year.

The 48th Precinct, which covers Arthur Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway from Crotona Park to the southern border of the borough, experienced the most significant increase in reported rapes during the 28-day period. Cases there rocketed up from one last year to nine this year.

Despite the big jump in rapes across the Bronx, the other major crimes in the borough did not change much from the previous year. Grand larcenies had the biggest change in terms of numbers among major crimes, but it was not by a large amount. There was just a 2.9% decrease in grand larcenies, from 648 in 2023 to 629 in 2024.

The total number of reported major crimes for the 28-day period ending Dec. 1 – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and vehicle thefts – was mostly flat compared to last year. Major crimes went up 1.12% in the Bronx, from 2,146 cases in 2023 to 2,170 in 2024.

This small jump is due in large part to the fact that murders, robberies, felony assaults and burglaries had almost no change. The most significant change among those categories was burglaries rising from 199 to just 202.
