The New York Blood Center (NYBC) held a special recognition event on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to honor the efforts of blood drive chairpersons from across New York City. The event, held at The View at Battery Park, celebrated the individuals who have played a pivotal role in organizing blood drives throughout the city, including several from the Bronx.
More than 200 chairpersons attended the event, representing a network of community leaders who have helped ensure a steady supply of life-saving blood donations. These dedicated volunteers were recognized for their hard work and community outreach efforts. City Council Member Rita Joseph and representatives from the Bronx and Brooklyn Borough Presidents’ Offices were also present to show their support.
Julia Tang, a 23-year-old blood recipient and former Beta Thalassemia patient, delivered an emotional speech at the event. Tang, who was cured after receiving a bone marrow transplant, spoke about the profound impact blood donations had on her recovery.
“As someone who’s been on both sides of receiving and now giving blood, I want to express how crucial it is to donate,” Tang said. “People like me are alive today because of the generosity of donors, and I am deeply grateful for the role these chairpersons play in making that possible. Your efforts truly save lives.”
Deputy Director of Health Mahnoor Jaura and Rafael Gomez, community liaison at the Bronx Borough President’s office, delivered remarks of their own during the event. They also presented a citation on behalf of Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson.
“Donating blood is not just an act of kindness; it is a lifesaving gift that can make a profound difference in our community,” said Bronx Borough President Gibson in a statement. “Every donation can save lives, and I encourage everyone to consider giving blood. Together, we can ensure that those in need receive the care and support they deserve.”
During the event, blood drive chairpersons were recognized for their leadership in organizing blood drives throughout 2023. Many of them worked in partnership with local organizations, schools, and businesses to encourage blood donations within their communities. They received awards in appreciation for their contributions to maintaining the city’s blood supply.

Jeannie Mascolino, Vice President of the New York Blood Center, expressed her gratitude to the chairpersons.
“We’re incredibly thankful for the dedication and passion of our blood drive chairpersons,” said Mascolino. “They are at the heart of our mission, and today’s event is just one small way to show our appreciation for their tireless efforts. Their work ensures we have the blood supply needed to save lives.”
The NYBC is calling on organizations, businesses, and schools to continue their involvement in blood drives. Individuals interested in hosting a blood drive can find more information on how to get started at the NYBC website.
For those looking to donate blood, eligible donors can give every 56 days, up to six times per year. More information on donor eligibility and blood drive locations can be found by visiting the NYBC’s website at nybc.org or calling (800) 933-2566. Even those unable to donate blood can still support the NYBC’s life-saving mission by texting “NYBC” to 20222 to make a $25 donation.
This recognition event highlights the essential role that Bronx blood drive organizers and others across New York City play in ensuring that the NYBC continues to meet the critical need for blood donations in the region.
