Hello readers and welcome to another edition of Around Town.

Local Sailor Continues 75-Year Seabee Tradition

U.S. Navy sailor Petty Officer 2nd Class George Sarpong, a native of the borough, is part of the Seabees, which work construction for the military and fight all around the world.

Sarpong is assigned to the naval construction battalion located at Port Hueneme, CA.

As part of the Seabees, he works as a hospital corpsman where he is responsible for the health and readiness in a Seabee medical department.

I enjoy training Seabees about medical readiness, especially since they deploy to places around the world.

Seeking Volunteers

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is seeking volunteers the organization’s leaders believe are sorely needed to work with children who have very serious medical illnesses in the borough.

Wish granting volunteers assist in the granting of each wish with Make-A-Wish staff with a volunteer partner.

They experience the magic that occurs when a child is permitted to dream of a world where they can experience their favorite things.

If you would like to volunteer or to secure a speaker from Make-A-Wish to visit your organization call Kim St. Bernard at (212) 957-9474 extension 135 or email her at
