3 Bronx high schools awarded accreditation

Three Bronx high schools were awarded re-accreditation for their impressive educational curriculum.

The Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools, based out of Philadelphia, PA, accredits schools that meet a strict set of standards.

According to the MSCSS these standards account for the institutions mission/beliefs/objectives, governance and leadership, organization design and staff, education programs, media services and technology, student services and activities, facilities, health and safety, finances, student learning, and future planning.

“We had 15 visitors, most from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, assess the school,” explained Cardinal Spellman High School principal Cornelius McCarthy. “They come in with a fresh set of eyes and can make recommendations that compliment the school.”

Re-accreditation was given to Cardinal Spellman High School, Aquinas High School, and St. Raymond High School.

“These three schools join a prestigious network of Middle States accredited schools committed to a more fair and comprehensive assessment of achievement and success that goes beyond standardized test schools and students’ performance to encompass programs, services and facilities,” stated Henry Cram, president and executive director of MSCSS.

The process of accreditation demands an in-depth look at each of the schools by a team of Middle State representatives, sent to observe classroom environments, tour facilities, and assess schools plans for future improvement and development.

“We were excited with the report from the chairman of the visit,” said Sister Margaret Ryan of Aquinas High School, “we met all the standards outlined by Middle States and he felt our commitment resulted in a performance objective that would lead us to continuous improvement.”

The team also conducted interviews with teachers, students, administration, parents, and representatives from the Archdiocese of New York.

“The entire St. Raymond community is proud to be recognized as a school that holds true to its mission by providing a quality, value-based education,” states Bill Hanson, director of advancement at St. Raymond High School for Boys.

“These school communities should be commended for their commitment to ensure that every student reaches his or her full potential,” said Cram, who believes a schools quality is best measured by the schools ability to impact a student’s improvement and growth over time.
