Youth activism and local filmmaking take center stage in Bronx this weekend

JupiBx, a youth-led organization fighting for Puerto Rican independence, will host a Mayday town hall on Saturday, May 3, 1 p.m. at the Mill Brook Community Center at 201 St. Ann’s Ave.

People of all ages are invited to enjoy food and share experiences relating to workers’ and tenants’ rights, housing displacement and other community issues. JupiBx is already involved with tenant organizing efforts following the fire at 2910 Wallace Ave. and the negligent landlord at 514, 518 and 526 E. 138th St., and Jupi leaders said they especially welcome those residents’ views.

On May 2, “Bronx Independent Cinema Center Presents: First Fridays” will feature a screening of “The Security Guard,” which was filmed mostly in the Bronx and directed by West Farms native Wilfred La Salle.

The film tackles timely, controversial issues around gun violence and school safety. It premiered March 13 in Dobbs Ferry and, after being picked up by major streaming outlets, will now screen in the Bronx for the first time.

“The Security Guard” will show along with the documentary film “Minted: The Rise (and Fall?) of the NFT” by Nicholas Bruckman at the Rev. T. Wendell Foster Recreation Center at 1020 Jerome Ave. starting at 5:00 p.m., with a Q&A session to wrap up the evening.
