New York Botanical Garden

Composting Systems and Tools: A Master Composter Workshop

Sept. 15, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Head over to the New York Botanical Garden this Friday and dive into the different systems that you can use to create compost. The workshop is part of the NYC Compost Project’s Master Composter Certification Course, which aims to support the NYC Department of Sanitation by building a network of eco-conscious educators, advocates, and community composters. Find out more about the project here — each workshop is a standalone event, so the order or quantity of workshops you attend do not matter if you just want to try your hand at composting. 

Fall-O-Ween

Sept. 16 through Nov. 12

The New York Botanical Garden becomes the region’s pumpkin headquarters during NYBG Fall-O-Ween, offering a fun and engaging array of activities, programs, and photo opportunities for all ages. Experience hundreds of pumpkins and gourds on display; food and beverage talks, demonstrations, and tastings; and two family-friendly Spooky Garden Nights, offering Halloween-themed entertainment for adults and children alike. Fan favorite Adam Bierton returns to NYBG to create his intricate and nature-inspired pumpkin carvings and to host a master carver competition. Once again, the Botanical Garden is the place to see giant pumpkins during the last two weeks of October, culminating in the exciting Giant Pumpkin Carving Weekend.

Farmers Market

Every Wednesday through Oct. 18, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Visit the New York Botanical Garden Farmers Market to enjoy locally grown produce, baked goods, and other specialty items. The NYBG’s farmers market is one of the top 10 farmers markets in NYC, and it is located near the Mosholu entrance. Find out more here.

Ebony G. Patterson exhibition “…things come to thrive…in the shedding…in the molting…”

Aug. to Sept. 17, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Ebony G. Patterson brings her signature mixed media installations to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and NYBG’s landscape and galleries. Immerse yourself in the beauty of exotic flora and garden-inspired installations, such as a peacock sculpture and glitter-encrusted vultures. Patterson’s work invites visitors to reflect on their relationships with the natural world while also provoking questions around race, gender and colonialism. The New York Public Library Job Fair and Expo

Sept. 15, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Attention all job seekers — join the NYPL at the Bronx Library Center this Friday to meet recruiters, get career advice and hone your resume-building skills. The job fair will offer workshops on creating an effective Linkedin profile, discussions on understanding employee rights in the workplace, and even an opportunity to get a free professional headshot. Castle Hill YMCA

Castle Hill Y International Clean-Up Day 

Sept. 16, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Join the community members of Castle Hill in removing trash and cleaning the shorelines along the Castle Hill YMCA’s waterfront. The coastal clean-up is part of a wider project called The International Coastal Cleanup, which up until this point, has had 17 million volunteers collect more than 350 million pounds of trash from the world’s beaches and waterways in pursuit of cleaner, healthier oceans. Riverdale Art Fest

The first Riverdale Art Fest will add a thrilling component to the delicious food offerings that are a weekly staple of the Riverdale Y Sunday Market. The market is held each week in the Riverdale Temple parking lot at 4545 Independence Ave. (near 246th Street).

Designed to introduce talented Riverdale artists to their community and vice versa, the Riverdale Art Fest will fill the entire center aisle of the Market, featuring Riverdale artists’ extraordinary work in painting, photography, drawing, watercolor, spin art, acrylics, three-dimensional art and more.

Bronx Vegan Bazaar

Spend your Wednesday evening at the Bronx Vegan Bazaar, the first vegan expo for and by Bronxites, and aimed towards understanding the needs of the Bronx community to improve the health and commerce landscape of the borough. The event includes workshops and group activities, and more than 20 vegan food vendors, which include raw foods, vegan culture dishes, pastries and natural juices. Pumpkin Nights at the Bronx Zoo

Sept. 28 -Oct. 29, 6-10 p.m. Last entry is at 9 p.m. 

Pumpkin Nights at the Bronx Zoo, with more than 5,000 carved, animal-themed pumpkins over a half-mile jack-o’-lantern trail, will debut Thursday, Sept. 28 with live pumpkin carving demonstrations, games, festive fall treats and food trucks and fun for all ages. 

Tickets are $34.95 for adults 12 and up, and $24.95 for children ages 3-12 on Thursdays and Sundays, and $36.95 for adults and $26.95 for children on Fridays and Saturdays. Children under 3 are free. Wildlife Conservation Society members will receive a 40% discount.

At the turn of the 20th century, it was here that music was created and promoted. Famous Tin Pan Alley artists include Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Gus Edwards and Nora Bayes. Our Tin Pan Alley Tour will give a glimpse into what has become a worldwide cultural force – pop music.
