Recently, I read about some new cutting edge research that should have been on the front page of every newspaper in the country. Being that it didn’t make the mainstream media I thought it deserved coverage in this column. When I first discovered this miraculous research I was shocked that I could not find mainstream coverage anywhere, including Alzheimers’s organizations. Well, I guess when you may be able to cure Alzheimer’s disease for $50 a year it would put everyone out of business! So, I can only guess that they do not want you to know. What a world!
Dr. Kim Green, of the University of California at Irvine, gave the human dose equivalent of 2,000 to 3,000 mg. of niacinamide, which is a form of vitamin B3, to mice with Alzheimer’s disease. After treating the mice for only four months Dr, Green discovered that they were totally cured!
Alzheimer’s is a very frightening disease. It seems to come without warning and until now there has been no cure. The best one can hope for is to slow its progression with medications. Over five million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is expected to grow to fourteen million by 2050. If the current trend continues, one out of eight baby boomers will develop this disease. Those odds are pretty frightening!
The researchers at the University of California were both surprised and quite excited about their findings. It is rare for researchers to use the word “cure”, but that is exactly what happened. The niacinamide not only protected their brains from further memory loss but it also restored lost memory function. If this wasn’t exciting enough, niacinamide also improved the memory of mice without Alzheimer’s.
Although the research dose is considered to be high, animal studies have shown that the toxic dose for humans is somewhere around 375,000 mg. per day, which is about a pound. Most people in the field of natural health consider the research dose to be totally harmless. There has never been a reported death from niacinamide supplementation. Considering that over 250,000 deaths occur each year from prescription drugs, one can ague the point that a natural solution should always be considered as the first line of defense.
The results of this study were so impressive that the researchers have immediately moved forward with a six month clinical trial with Alzheimer’s patients. It will be a controlled trial where half of the patients receive 1,500 mg. of niacinamide twice a day and half receive a placebo.
When there is no cure for Alzheimer’s and the best one could hope for is to slow the progression of the disease, the treatment course of niacinamide stands out as an exceptional solution and best of all it is safe, natural and very inexpensive!
Ahhh! But the side effects? Niacinamide has side effects that you will actually want! It improves your sense of balance, any existing arthritis, mobility problems, fatigue, muscle weakness and it lowers the risk of cancer. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if some of the medications we take had these side effects.
I was so impressed with this study that I started to do some research about other practioners that used niacinamide to help their patients and what I found was quite interesting. Dr. William Kaufman used niacinamide to successfully treat his patients way back in the 1930’s. He was a true pioneer in the treatment of problems associated with niacinamide deficiencies. He discovered that many of the problems associated with aging are actually the result of inadequate amounts of niacinamide in the diet. Dr. Kaufman documented the positive effects of treating many common conditions with niacinamide. Fatigue, muscle strength, loss of balance, depression, joint mobility and osteoarthritis were all treated successfully.
Based on his research and observations Alzheimer’s patients would achieve the best results by taking 250 mg. every 1 ½ hours for a total of 12 doses. It certainly will be interesting to see what the results of the clinical trials at the University of California will be.
Dr. David Williams also used niacinamide to help his patients. He used Dr. Kaufman’s protocol but he found that he achieved better results if the niacinamide he used was preservative free.
Our next meeting will be on March 12 at 7:30 p.m. at P.S. 14. There is plenty of parking and no steps to climb so everyone has the opportunity to join us.
Our guest speaker will be Councilman James Vacca so it is sure to be a fun and informative meeting. Please come to the meeting with your questions and suggestions as we know that our councilman is always ready to work hard on our behalf.
If you have not already paid your dues for 2009 you can do so at our March meeting. Your dues are very important. We work hard to make our community a great place to live and we cannot do it without your support. We hope to see all of our members at the March meeting. Remember, together we can accomplish wonderful things for our community!
