New York City Council Member Rafael Salamanca Jr. conducted walkthroughs of P.S. 1X The Courtlandt School and P.S. 62 Inocensio Casanova on Friday, April 25, in the South Bronx.

Salamanca visited the schools to assess their conditions and to discuss school issues and concerns with the principals.

Upon his arrival at P.S. 1X, Salamanca was treated to a medley performance from the school’s chorus. He sat in on some classes and joined Principal Jenilee Ramirez for a tour of the school.

P.S. 62 greeted Salamanca with a performance from the cheerleading team. He and Principal Genesys Nunez-Goihy had a deep and productive discussion about the school’s biggest needs centered around providing students with the highest quality of education. During the walkthrough of the school, Salamanca was given a rundown of the culture there by the 5th Grade School President.

These visits reflected Salamanca’s dedication to revitalizing schools in his district. He hopes to help turn them into some of the highest-quality educational centers in the borough and in New York City.

Schools in the South Bronx have historically gone through financial and societal neglect. However, Salamanca has allocated a significant amount of city funds to improve the schools. He has allocated over $30.5 million in capital funding to schools in the Bronx. He intends to add even more funding throughout the remainder of his term in City Council. This includes another $1.8 million that he announced he will be providing to P.S. 1X during his visit there.
