With profound sadness, we reflect on the passing of Ozzie Virgil Sr., a true hero of baseball and a beloved member of our Bronx family. Ozzie was more than just an athlete—he was a pioneer, a community icon and an enduring symbol of hope. His journey from the Dominican Republic to becoming Major League Baseball’s first Dominican player was a testament to resilience, courage and an unbreakable spirit.
Ozzie’s impact stretched far beyond the baseball diamond. He became a part of the fabric of the Bronx, a borough that has always been defined by its strength, diversity and spirit of perseverance. Just this past May, during Bronx Week 2024, Ozzie was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame by the Bronx Borough President, Vanessa L. Gibson —a truly special moment for us all. It was a tribute to his remarkable achievements, trailblazing journey and unshakable connection to the Bronx.
For decades, Ozzie inspired young Bronxites, showing them that dreams could indeed come true with hard work and determination. He faced challenges that most could not imagine, but he did so with grace and humility, always giving back to the community that embraced him as one of their own. His legacy is not just one of home runs and historic firsts—it is one of breaking barriers, lifting others up and ensuring the next generation can play the game they love.
We mourn the loss of Ozzie Virgil Sr., but we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will forever be a part of the Bronx. His name on the Bronx Walk of Fame will continue to remind us, and future generations, of what true greatness looks like—not just in the records he broke, but in the lives he touched and the hope he spread.
Thank you, Ozzie, for the courage, the joy and the inspiration you brought to us all. You will always be in the heart of the Bronx — rest in power, Ozzie Virgil Sr. — a true legend.
