NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx (NCB) on March 27 announced the opening of a satellite Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). The CPEP provides a full spectrum of psychiatric emergency services, including triage, referral, emergency visits, and three extended observation beds. The NCB CPEP services are available to children, adolescents, and adults and allow both campuses to meet service and community needs by allowing for the flexibility of extended evaluation and stabilization for longer periods of time.

“We could not have created this new space without the support of our executive office, engineers and architects, and all of our staff who were involved in the planning and design,” said Dr. Maryann Popiel, chair of Behavioral Health at NCB. “Our goal is to expand access to quality outpatient mental health treatment to our community her in the Bronx.”

By offering this additional access at NCB, the CPEP will help increase available beds and space at Jacobi’s existing CPEP facilities. The CPEP’s extended observation parameters allows for an enhanced patient experience with additional treatment and nutrition choices. Furthermore, the state allows for more generous reimbursements of CPEP beds, allowing for increased revenue to help maintain a world-class level for care for all who need psychiatric emergency services.

“For decades, Bronx families have relied on NCB for their healthcare, particularly for their behavioral health needs,” said Alfredo Jones, deputy CEO of NCB. “This new satellite CPEP demonstrates a significant investment in these needs and further demonstrates NCB’s commitment to our community for years to come.”

Additionally, Mr. Jones, Dr. Popiel, and Mr. Stanco recognized Dr. Haseen Sharma-Cooper, Lisa Johnson, Martha Diaz, and Esmie Taylor, RN as essential to the CPEP program’s expansion and success.
