In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson hosted an event at Bronx Borough Hall on Oct. 3, recognizing the contributions of Hispanic Americans from the Bronx.
The gathering, held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Rotunda at 851 Grand Concourse, was a tribute to those who have enriched and influenced the borough’s cultural and community landscape.
The event brought together leaders of non-profits and businesses, including representatives from Ponce Bank, Essen Healthcare and Havana Café Restaurant. Attendees were treated to special entertainment by JJ Band, DJ Lex, and the Stylistics, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Debra Lee Santos, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Bronx Free Press and Manhattan Times, emceed the evening’s festivities, guiding the audience through the program.
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, acknowledging the histories, cultures, and contributions of residents whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Bronx Borough President Gibson honored several individuals whose dedication and service have positively impacted the borough. The honorees were:
- Hon. Joaquin Orellano, J.C.C.: A New York City Civil Court judge in Bronx County.
- Luis Gerardo Gonzalez Jr.: Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Ponce Bank.
- Dr. Silvio Goris: Senior Medical Director at Essen Health Care.
- Daniel Irizarry, ESQ.: Court Attorney.
- David Ortiz, ESQ.: Court Attorney.
- Richard and Claudia Berroa: Owners of Claudy’s Kitchen, a local restaurant.
- Melissa Valencia: Director of Quality and Risk Management at Essen Health Care.
Additionally, Deylin Pena-Rodriguez, a junior at Taft High School, was awarded the Youth Award for his achievements and promise as a young leader in the borough.
Bronx Borough President Gibson highlighted the importance of the contributions of Hispanic Americans in shaping the fabric of the Bronx. “Their contributions not only enrich our borough but serve as a source of pride and inspiration for future generations,” she said.
