Monsignor Scanlan High School’s E-sports teams captured the 2025 New York Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) championships in both Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Marvel Rivals, marking a major milestone for the school’s growing program.
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team and the newly formed Marvel Rivals team were guided by teachers and coaches David Caneppa and Damian Verutes, with Verutes joining the coaching staff this season. The Marvel Rivals team, launched this year, went undefeated throughout the season on their way to a dominant championship win.
These victories come just two years after Monsignor Scanlan launched its E-sports program in 2023. The school’s rapid rise on the competitive gaming scene includes a 2024 trip to the National Championship in Orlando, Florida, where the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team represented New York on the national stage.
