Available to those earning up to $250K, ‘affordable housing’ lottery opens in the Bronx

An affordable housing lottery has opened for 50 units in a newly constructed building just one block from Fordham University’s Rose Hill Campus.

The units are in a nine-story, 165-unit mixed-income building at 4720 3rd Ave. The lottery is for 25 one-bedrooms, 22 two-bedrooms, and three three-bedrooms. Income requirements range from $80,606 for an individual up to $250,380 for a seven-person household.

One-bedroom rents start at $2,206, with three-bedrooms reaching $3,950.

The building is called the Arabella. It is tucked in the heart of Belmont—the borough’s Little Italy—and is just minutes from Arthur Avenue. It features a fitness center, terrace, recreation room, doorman, parking, bike storage, lounge area and more.

The Arabella, developed by Vertical Community Development and designed by Ismael Leyva Architects, features a modern triangular exterior. The building is also located close to the B, D, and 4 subway lines.

The 2024 Emmy Award nominations contain a few Bronx Tales

Everybody in film and television wants an Emmy — it’s like having the Commissioner’s trophy, but for the arts. Well, the nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards were recently released, and The Bronx is well-represented in the lineup of potential winners.

“The Bronx Beat,” a series produced by the YES Network, is up for an award in the Public Affairs Program (Series) category. The Bronx Economic Development Corporation was able to assist with this program, which spotlights businesses, cultural institutions and neighborhoods in The Bronx. BXEDC President Rob Walsh hosted several of the episodes that were nominated.

Each episode airs on the jumbotron at Yankee Stadium and reflects a side of The Bronx that may otherwise go unnoticed. The borough’s tourists may be coming for baseball, but The Bronx Beat aims to show that it’s a great place for a lot of other reasons as well. Hopefully, the judges will see these stories – and the incredible production quality – and see how worthy the series is of an Emmy.

Wendy Clark (née Yang) the owner of the new pilates studio on City Island, has also been nominated for an Emmy. Aside from her new business, Clark is a costume designer and worked on the series “Fallout,” which was nominated for Outstanding Costumes in the Fantasy/Sci-Fi category.

Alison Wiedmann, another City Island resident, was also part of an Emmy-nominated team for her work on the production of “Hacks: Bit by Bit” in the Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series category.

Writer Raj Tawney wins award for Bronx family memoir

Writer Raj Tawney, 37, has won a bronze medal at the 2024 Living Now Book Awards for his book “Colorful Palate: A Flavorful Journey Through a Mixed American Experience,” which details his multicultural Bronx family roots through recipes, stories and photos.

The Living Now awards were established in 2008 to recognize creativity and innovation among recently-published lifestyle books, according to the awards website. Tawney’s win in the Inspirational Memoir category is “the cherry on top of a complete ice cream sundae,” he told the Bronx Times.

Tawney grew up mainly on Long Island with a father from Mumbai, India and a Puerto Rican mother from the Bronx. His grandmother lived in the Bronx, and Tawney has fond memories of visiting her to cook and eat together, learning bits of family history.

Food was a big deal within his blended family, who crossed cultural lines in every sense. Tawney’s grandmother, a Puerto Rican Bronxite, was known for cooking the best Italian-style meatballs. His mother and grandmother mastered the North Indian chickpea curry dish, chana masala — and his wife has learned their techniques. “It’s like a family heirloom now.”

Bronx to gain new EV fast-charging station amid City’s push to close charging gap

Bronx drivers will have greater access to electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations this fall.

Construction on a public EV fast-charging station on White Plains Road is set to wrap up in November, NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced Thursday.

The new station is being constructed at a time when the Bronx has the fewest number of fast chargers among the five boroughs, according to city data. With a high concentration of Licensed Taxi and Limousine Drivers living in the Bronx, the city is taking steps to close the charging gap between the borough and the rest of NYC with the station.

The city is also completing the construction of a fast-charging station in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bensonhurst. It is expected to open early next year.

“As a former cab driver, I understand how important equity of access will be to our efforts to transition for-hire vehicles away from fossil fuels,” Rodriguez said. “By targeting Bronx and Southern Brooklyn neighborhoods where we know many drivers live, we will better meet growing demand for more fast charging as well as advance our ambitious climate goals.”
