Councilmember Marjorie Velázquez hosted the second installment of this year’s Family Summer Series earlier this month in Morris Park and Allerton. This year, the Family Summer Series features a series of movie nights throughout Council District 13 and two “Family Day” events, bringing life-size board games, sports activities, entertainment and more to the community.

On Friday, May 12, families kicked off the weekend with a special viewing of “Lightyear”in Loreto Park in the Morris Park section of the district, in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and the Morris Park Business Improvement District. Dozens of families took advantage of the pre-summer weather and enjoyed a night out, complete with pizza, popcorn and more.

The next day, Velázquez and residents partook in the first Family Day of the season at Mazzei Playground.

Nestled in the Allerton section of the district, Mazzei Playground transformed into a safe space for families and kids to enjoy life-size board games, bounce houses, an obstacle course, caricatures artists and treats like snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn. Residents also had access to resource tents including the New York City Public Library-Van Nest Branch and Assurance Wireless. Dozens of families signed up for library cards, and qualifying households received a free smartphone and cellular service as a part of the Federal Lifeline Assistance program.

“This is a moment for families to get together and enjoy the beautiful weather safety and as a community,” said Velázquez. “Events like this are about building equity within our communities, and giving back.”

The next Family Day is set for Sunday, May 28, from 12-4 p.m. at Ferry Point Park. The event is free and open to the public.
