Gibson to host annual Dominican Heritage Celebration Thursday

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson joins Fidelis Care, Union Community Health Center, Ponce Bank, VNS Health, the Bronx Terminal Market and other partners for her annual Dominican Heritage Month celebration to be held Thursday, Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Grand Slam Banquet Hall located at 478 E. Tremont Ave. in the Bronx.
The event will include live entertainment provided by Folkloric Dance Group/Folklorico and DJ Lex, with special greetings by the consulate general of the Dominican Republic, Eligio Jaquez. Providing the keynote address will be NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Equity and Inclusion Wendy Garcia. News 12 The Bronx’s Elly Morillo will serve as emcee for the evening.
During the program, Gibson will honor community leaders for their contributions to the residents of the Bronx and New York City. They include president of the New York State Latino Restaurant Bar & Lounge Association and Owner of Mon Amour Coffee & Wine, Jeffrey Garcia; winner of the Best Animated Short Film at Bridge Fest and children’s book author, Luz Maria Mack; and president of Dominicanos USA Eddie Cuesta.
Jamal Disla from the International School for Liberal Arts who arrived to the U.S. in April of 2020 not speaking a word of English, will receive Gibson’s Youth Award. Today, Disla is ranked second out of 69 in his class with a cumulative average of 95.75, all while learning to speak English. Garcia will also be awarded.
