Human remains, including a torso, were found inside a Bronx apartment during a wellness check on Tuesday night, prompting a massive police investigation.

Police said the gruesome discovery took place at about 8:25 p.m. on March 5, when officers from the 44th Precinct responded to an apartment at 979 Summit Ave. in Highbridge.

Sources familiar with the case reported that the responding officers went to the 6th floor of the building after being advised of a possible sound of gunfire from the area.

The officers then knocked on an apartment door and entered the residence where they found the torso inside. According to published reports, the head and legs had been detached.

EMS units picked up the remains and brought them to the Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Police have yet to identify the remains.

A person of interest at the residence had been taken into custody for questioning, it was reported. So far, no charges have been filed against that individual.

The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
