New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a significant expansion of Citi Bike on Friday, extending bike-share access to underserved communities in the outer boroughs, including Norwood and Riverdale in the Bronx. Beginning in fall 2025, the expansion will add over 250 new stations and 2,900 bikes citywide, half of which will be electric.

“This Citi Bike expansion is the latest way we’re making it easier and more affordable to get around New York City, particularly for low-income New Yorkers,” Mayor Adams said. “People in Brownsville and other low-income neighborhoods deserve Citi Bike access as much as any other New Yorker, and this expansion brings us closer to ensuring just that.”

The Bronx neighborhoods of Norwood and Riverdale will join Brooklyn’s Brownsville, East New York, and Bay Ridge, and Queens communities west of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in receiving new Citi Bike stations. The expansion also includes adding docks in high-demand areas such as Midtown Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, and Harlem.

“Citi Bike is more popular than ever because it’s convenient, sustainable, and a quick way to get around,” said NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

In total, the Citi Bike expansion will bring bike stations within a five-minute walk of 64% of New Yorkers — more than 5.6 million residents. When combined with the city’s e-scooter share program, which operates in the East Bronx and Eastern Queens, more than 75% of New York City’s residential population will have access to shared micromobility services.

“It’s been astounding to see Citi Bike grow from an idea into a critical part of New York City’s transportation network, now supporting over 1.6 million unique riders on their 44 million journeys this year,” said Caroline Samponaro, vice president of external affairs at Lyft Urban Solutions, which operates the Citi Bike.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson applauded the effort, emphasizing the benefits for Bronx communities. “This expansion brings new opportunities for Bronx residents to connect with jobs, education, and essential services,” she said.

New York State Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar, who represents central Queens, praised the system’s growing reach. “Citi Bike is an affordable, convenient mode of transit for New Yorkers, who take over 30 million rides each year,” she said. “This is critical to ensure all New Yorkers, especially those of us in transit deserts, have equal access to this popular program.”

With the completion of this expansion, the Citi Bike system will grow to more than 36,000 bikes and 2,400 stations, nearly seven times larger than the 6,000 bikes and 332 stations that Citi Bike launched with in May 2013. The expansion will help the city continue to meet record demand; in October 2024, the system set a monthly record with 5.1 million rides, including a single-day record of 193,645 rides.

As the expansion begins, Adams also reinforced the city’s commitment to sustainability. “This is about building a more affordable, equitable, and sustainable transportation system in all five boroughs,” he said.
