The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) has recently opened its first hospital-based outpatient physical and occupational therapy gym for children aged 3-11 in the Bronx.
The new facility caters to children with various rehabilitation needs, such as physical therapy following orthopedic injuries and occupational therapy for those with complex medical conditions. It is expected to accommodate up to 9,000 patient visits per year.
The pediatric therapists and physicians at CHAM will collaborate with young patients and their families to enhance each child’s ability to function independently, enabling them to actively participate in home, school and community environments.
In addition to promoting independence for kids, pediatric rehabilitation therapy also facilitates motor development and function, improves strength and endurance, enhances learning opportunities and eases challenges with daily care giving.
This new space addresses a significant need in the Bronx, as previously children requiring physical and occupational therapy had to travel outside the borough for care or use shared facilities with adult rehabilitation patients. Now, Bronx children can access specialized therapies and treatments close to home in this dedicated space at CHAM.
