Back-to-School Supplies Giveaway Event

2-5 p.m.

The Mall at Bay Plaza is having a back-to-school supplies giveaway! In honor of the mall’s 10th anniversary since opening, it will pass out free school supplies to kids. The event will also feature a rock climbing wall and accompanying DJ beats by DJ Omar. Tickets are required to attend.

Saturday, Aug. 17

Brownstone Steps Garden Reading Series 

3:30-5 p.m.

This Saturday, bring an appetite for drama to Fannie’s Community Garden. The open-air playhouse will premiere the dramatic works of Bronx playwrights Desiree Rucker and Alicia Foxworth. Rucker’s “House Tour” is a mystery-thriller that unravels the origins of a strange couple at a homeowners meeting. Foxworth’s “The King’s Ally” relates a political power struggle in Al-Andalus. Attendees should bring a lawn chair or a small blanket.

Kids Salsa Class at Nieves Latin Dance Studio

3-4 p.m.

In this hour-long class, Bronxite students ages six and up will learn to salsa. Students will cultivate their partner-work skills and footwork with licensed salseros. Nieves Latin Dance Studio is offering this free trial class for first-time students. After a free class, students may choose from two monthly dance class packages.

Sunday, Aug. 18

Wave Hill House’s Seeds and Weeds Workshop

10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Wave Hill House invites Bronxite families to their horticulture haven. In the Seeds and Weeds workshop, families will use plant parts to make paper while learning about germination and seed dispersal. Wave Hill House will also host a mid-event storytime program in their Gund Theater.

Bronx Summer Concert Series

Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson has teamed up with Bronx Night Market co-founder Marco Shalma to host the second annual Bronx Summer Concert Series. This Sunday’s concert, a celebration of Bronxite salseros, fusion performers, breakers, and more, will be held at St. Mary’s Park. Join the open-air bash with the Bronx Summer Concert Series!
