Here’s to the women!
The Bronx Times Reporter celebrated 25 women from all fields and walks-of-life who are making a difference in the lives of Bronxites in a reception attended by hundreds at Villa Barone Manor on Thursday, June 27.
The gala awards dinner was the fourth annual “25 Bronx Influential Women” celebration for the media company, part of the Community Newspaper Group. The parent company of CNG is News Corporation.
News Corporation senior vice-president Les Goodstein said that the event is about celebrating women who are unsung heros and who are the foundation of the community. In their own quiet ways, the honorees are making the Bronx a better place to live, he said.
“The 25 honorees here tonight give of themselves day-in and day-out,” said Bronx Times publisher Laura Guerriero. “They are not famous, politically connected, or have an agenda. These women are modest and hardworking. They care about our borough and strive to do all in their power to improve the quality-of-life of every resident.”
Honored were entrepreneur Dolores Batista, Pelham Parkway South Neighborhood Association president Edith Blitzer, Bronx YMCA executive director Sharlene Brown, Bronx Women’s Business Resource Center director Marcia Cameron, Bronx River Alliance executive director and Bronx River administrator for the New York City Parks Dept. Linda Cox, and Ice House Cafe owner Terry Dambinskas.
Also, Hostos College alumni director Nydia Edgecomb, Golden Glow Cookie owner and founder Rose Florio, Monroe College vice-president for student services Roberta Greenberg, Bronx Children’s Museum advocate Hope Harley, City Island realtor Jackie Kyle Kall, teacher for the blind at New York Institute for Special Education Donna Karlson, Westchester Square Zerega Improvement Organization founder and leader Sandi Lusk, and retired obstetrics nurse leader at Lincoln Medical Center Mirian Moses.
Also, Harry S. Truman High School principal Sana Nasser, Throggs Neck Benevolent Association leader Karin O’Connor, manger of Bronx public affairs for Con Edison Evelyn Oliver, east Bronx community leader and educator Bailey Provetto, Rosalie Hall director Sister Diane Prusinski, Community Board 6 chairwoman Wendy Rodriguez, Community Board 11 member and educator Joanne Russo-Rubino, Bronx Council on the Arts executive director Deirdre Scott, Healthfirst community outreach coordinator Krystal Serrano, New York Yankees senior vice-president for marketing Deborah Tymon, and youth advocate Patricia Williams.
