Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced last week that a Bronx man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for opening fire inside the emergency room of NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi in 2022, sending patients and staff scrambling for safety.
The shooter, Keber Martinez, 25, was sentenced by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Jeanette Rodriguez-Morick after pleading guilty to first-degree Assault.
Clark condemned the Martinez’ actions, emphasizing the danger posed to innocent bystanders.
“The defendant opened fire inside Jacobi’s emergency room, wounding one man and showing complete disregard for the patients and staff, with one bullet lodging in a wall close to a woman holding a baby. The defendant’s violent actions have now been answered with a substantial prison sentence,” Clark said in a statement.
The incident took place on Jan. 25, 2022, when Martinez entered the hospital’s emergency room and fired four shots at a 35-year-old man, striking the victim once in the left arm. The attack, which was caught on hospital surveillance footage, triggered panic among those present as patients and staff fled the scene. One of the bullets struck a wall near a woman who was holding her baby.
Martinez fled the hospital immediately after the shooting and was later apprehended in Harlem. The victim, though severely injured, survived the attack.
In addition to the 12-year prison sentence, Martinez will face five years of post-release supervision.
