On Saturday, Oct. 26, Bronx residents took to the streets to walk, run, and roll a 5K route, joining forces in the fight against domestic violence. The Bronx continues to have the highest rates of domestic violence homicides across New York City, according to city data, underscoring the urgent need for community action and awareness.
The event was sponsored by the Urban Resource Institute, the nation’s largest provider of domestic violence shelter services. The nonprofit highlighted the alarming statistic that every minute in the United States, 24 people experience domestic partner violence. Statistics reveal that one in three women and one in four men will experience violence from an intimate partner each year, illustrating the widespread nature of this crisis.
Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, who attended the event, noted that her office is currently handling over 1,600 domestic violence cases. Clark urged victims and those impacted by domestic violence to seek help, emphasizing the resources available through the Crime Victims Assistance Bureau, which can be reached at (718) 590-2115.
This 5K event served as both a call to action and a reminder of the support available to Bronx residents affected by domestic violence. Organizers and participants alike stressed the importance of community solidarity in addressing this pervasive issue.
