The number of reported murders, burglaries and grand larcenies across the Bronx spiked during the 28-day period from Sept. 30 to Oct. 27, compared to the same period of time last year, according to the NYPD’s latest crime stats.
Murders in the Bronx were up 50% for the 28-day period through Oct. 27, compared to last year – from six reported cases to nine.
The biggest jump in murders was seen in the 40th Precinct, which covers Port Morris, Mott Haven and Melrose. There were two murders in the precinct during the 28-day period, compared to none for the same period last year.
Burglaries across the Bronx climbed 25.8% year-over-year, from 190 cases during the 28-day period in 2023 to 239 in 2024.
The biggest increase in burglaries was seen in both the 43rd Precinct, which oversees Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, White Plains Road and Parkchester, and the 45th Precinct, which covers Throggs Neck, Co-op City and City Island. Burglaries went up in the 43rd Precinct from 11 last year to 27 this year and in the 45th Precinct from 14 last year to 30 this year.
Grand larcenies across the borough spiked, increasing 11.9% during the 28-day period, from 664 in 2023 to 743 in 2024.
In addition to burglaries, the 43rd Precinct also had the most significant change when it came to reported grand larcenies. Cases there climbed drastically year-over-year, from 51 last year to 91 this year.
Yet another major crime with a notable year-over-year increase during the 28-day period was rape. Reported rapes rose 26.9%, from 26 in 2023 to 33 in 2024. However, this new number is a slight decrease from the 37 reported in September 2024.
Reported rapes went up the most in October 2024 within the confines of the 48th Precinct, which covers Arthur Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway, from Crotona Park to the southern border. Cases there increased from none last year to four this year.

Year-over-year, the total number of reported major crimes for the 28-day period ending Oct. 27 – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and vehicle thefts – rose 4.06% compared to last year, from 2,268 to 2,360. The large boost in burglaries and grand larcenies greatly contributed to this change.
For the year through Oct. 27, major crimes are up slightly compared to the 10-month period in 2023. There has been a 1.99% increase over this period of time, from 24,637 in 2023 to 25,128 in 2024.
