Diabetes information and recipes

Montefiore Health System is holding a diabetes awareness event that will include food tasting from all over the globe.

The Friday, November 2 event offers an afternoon of food tasting, health information and diabetes risk screenings.

It takes place at the Grand Hall at Montefiore’s Moses Campus at 111 E. 210th Street from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Montefiore is hosting the event because of the increased prevalence of diabetes over the past three decades, with the borough being particularly hard hit.

Sepcial guests include the Bronx Salad creator and Mind Builders, a community based performing arts center.

Attendees will also learn about activities and classes they can have access to all year long. There is no cost to attend this event.

Serving in the U.S. Navy

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Katherine Aponte, who was originally from the borough, is serving as culinary specialist aboard the USS Mason, based in Norfolk, VA.

She is a 2013 Monroe College graduate.

In her current role, she is responsible for finances reguarding provisions and supplies for the ship.

Aponte credits success in the U.S. Navy to many of the lessons learned in Bronx, according to the U.S. Navy.

Growing up in a diverse background, helped me work with sailors from all different walks of life.

The sailor added that she enjoys providing customer service to all the sailors she works with, and also believes that patience is important.

Being patient gives me a better understanding of my surroundings. Without patience, you take away from learning new things and achieving your goals in life.
