The Walgreens at 406 East Fordham Rd. in the Bronx announced that it will be permanently shutting its doors on Thursday, Nov. 7.
The closure comes in the wake of the corporation announcing that it is shutting down approximately 1,200 stores across the United States by 2027 as the pharmacy chain struggles with slumping consumer spending. The East Fordham Road store is among the 500 slated to close within the next 12 months.
According to Walgreens’ management, the store has suffered from a slump in business.
Some Bronx residents, however, have speculated that the E Fordham Road store is also suffering due to theft. Some customers said they have witnessed people go into the store and leave with multiple items without paying.
Many of the aisles in this store are already mostly empty. Additionally, many older customers expressed concern about having to travel farther in order to pick up their prescriptions.
According to a sign at the store, customers will be able to get their prescriptions at any Walgreens store. This includes a nearby location at 49 West Fordham Rd.
