One of our members who lives on Pennyfield Avenue received a phony letter which supposedly was sent by the New York City Buildings Department telling her that she had to remove a tree on her property or she would receive a fine of thousands of dollars. The letter was clearly a fake and was designed to upset the property owner who is a senior citizen. If anyone else has received one of these letters, please call our phone number at (718) 823-0327 and report it to us. The phony letter has been sent on to the real Buildings Department for action and I hope they catch the culprit. It was not funny!
Also, I’d like to remind you that other energy companies are sending representatives to your doors who say they are from Con Ed. Once in your house, they ask for your Con Ed bill and try to persuade you to change from Con Ed to save you money. In all of my experience with this, no one has ever saved money and you still have to pay Con Ed every month any way for delivering the gas to your house lines. My advice is not to let them in.
I just received word from Community Board 10 that a group home is proposed for a new building located on the corner of Lawton Avenue and Throgs Neck Boulevard. There are two addresses listed for the property by the Buildings Department, 227 Throgs Neck Boulevard and 2992 Lawton Avenue. CB 10 will be holding a public hearing on the matter next week, so I suggest interested parties attend our meeting on Tuesday, June 24. I have seen the property, which is owned by Frank Porco, a local builder, and I don’t believe it was built to zoning regulations. We were unable to see the property when the structure was being built, as the fencing around the site hid what was going on from view. After the fence’s removal, I was surprised to see that an attached two family house was approved by the Buildings Department for that site, as they are no longer allowed in Throggs Neck. The houses should have been two family detached only. We will discuss our next move on Tuesday, June 24.
