A 56-year-old Bronx man was killed early Wednesday morning in a hit-and-run collision at the intersection of East 163rd Street and Westchester Avenue in the Bronx’s 41st Precinct, police said.
At approximately 6:33 a.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, later identified as Alhadji Fofana, lying unconscious and unresponsive in the roadway. Emergency Medical Services transported Fofana to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad revealed that Fofana was attempting to cross Westchester Avenue in the northernmost crosswalk from east to west when a driver in a 2008 Ford van struck him. The driver fled the scene immediately following the collision.
Further examination determined that the van had been abandoned and an attempt had been made to set it on fire before the suspect fled on foot to an unknown location. Authorities later discovered that the vehicle and its license plate had previously been reported stolen.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
