Pickles, which is expected to open in the coming days at 3395 E. Tremont Avenue, off Meyers Street, will be open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week. There will be a few tables to sit down and eat and the deli will even make deliveries to Throggs Neck and surrounding communities for lunch.
The visionary behind the deli-venture is, 33-year-old Jimmy Murray. A Throggs Neck native, Murray made his living as a DJ through the late 90’s and early 00’s at neighborhood pubs.
“My experience as a DJ will certainly shine through the way I operate my deli,” Murray said. “I’m very detailed-orientated and I only do things the right way. When you leave my shop with soup and a sandwich, you’re also going to be leaving with a napkin, a spoon, and a smile.”
However, Murray’s experience doesn’t stop there for he has been intimately acquainted with the food industry by working behind the counter and making sandwiches for over 20 years now. Besides his business experience Murray claims that his mother has had a vast influence on his gastronomic know-how.
“Even as a child I remember being in the kitchen cooking with my mother,” said Murray. “It was from this early age that I began to love cooking.”
Murray decided to open up a deli approximately six months ago. He claims that he wanted to give back to the community that he grew up in and loves. He wants to open a first-class NY style sandwich shop.
“There’s a desperate need for a real breakfast and lunch deli in Throggs Neck,” he said. “We have the best pizza, Chinese, and Italian food around, but the sandwich component is missing.”
Although meager in stature, at 800 square feet, Pickles compensates for this with a robust character. The deli’s theme is green and yellow sporting the colors throughout the establishment.
Visible from blocks away the store’s yellow and green banner reading, “Pickles New York Deli & Bagel,” is sure to attract attention. The catchy name Pickles, surprisingly doesn’t have any particular significance behind it. According to Murray, he merely wanted to open a traditional NYC style deli and Pickles just seemed to fit. Nevertheless, he will honor its name by selling a variety of pickles, five of six different kinds, he said.
“Pickles is going to be a success simply because it’s going to have quality food at an affordable price,” said Murray.
Pickles will be open Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
