A knife-wielding 19-year-old man who was shot and wounded by police has been charged after threatening officers last week. According to reports, 41st Precinct police responded to a call of a man beating a woman at the corner of Tiffany Street and Westchester Avenue on Wednesday, November 23. When officers arrived to the scene, a woman flagged down their patrol car and informed them her 19-year-old boyfriend, Shamel Jones, had assaulted her. After canvassing the area, the victim pointed out Jones to the officers. The suspect fled into 877 Intervale Avenue. Three officers and a lieutenant chased Jones into the building around 7:15 p.m. and followed him into apartment 6. Police discovered Jones inside a third-floor kitchen brandishing a 12-inch knife. Despite repeated verbal commands given by police to drop his weapon, Jones was pepper sprayed by the lieutenant, but was unaffected by the blast. Jones then lunged at police with the knife causing one of the officers to fire a single shot striking Jones in the lower left back. Medics rushed Jones to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition and has undergone surgery. Police stated Jones is expected to survive and has been charged with assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.
