The Parroquia De Holy Family Church celebrates Mother’s Day with a Saturday fashion show. Organizer Julia Rodrigues worked tirelessly to ensure the show’s success, and hopes to continue her more than 20-year-long tradition of hosting events at the church. Judge and attendee Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark says she has known Rodrigues for years, and views her as a community leader. “I’ve worked really hard to make the Bronx safe, and the only way to do that is really to listen to the people that live here,” said Clark. “Julia has told me the concerns. I’ve seen her do the work, and I’ve been proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with her to make sure I could do and bring my resources to this community to make it safe.” Photo Pamela Rozon
Festivities on Saturday included dancing, food, and a fashion show for all mothers to participate in. Some attendees happened to be a part of the recently reopened senior center of the church, which closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is really important for us to celebrate Mother’s Day because some seniors don’t have anybody in their family to come and give them a hug and celebrate,” said program coordinator Nelly Santacruz. The Mother’s day event had an array of food for its attendees. All of the dishes were cooked by volunteers, and some by event organizer Julia Rodrigues. Church member Lewis Cruz says he loves to volunteer for his community, “This is my church. My kids went to school here,” he said. “And they’ve always supported me and again, all they have to do is ask me and I’m here for anything that they need as far as any kind of community service.” Photo Pamela Rozon
The fashion show judges deliberate over who was best dressed. Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark says she was glad to judge the event, and feels events like the fashion show are important to celebrate the women of the community. “We stand on their shoulders,” she said. “They’ve sacrificed so much for us to have a better life so we have to do all that we can to honor them and protect them.” Photo Pamela Rozon
