Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson presented the Hip Hop Museum with a $1 million check in celebration of the 51st anniversary of Hip Hop on Saturday, Aug. 10.
The check fulfills a pledge Gibson made during her speech in her most recent annual State of the Borough, which was to support the completion of this cultural mecca, located at 585 Exterior St. The Hip Hop Museum attracts thousands of people, globally and locally, to visit the borough that birthed the musical genre.
In addition to the check presentation, Borough President Gibson joined the Museum for the unveiling of an 18-foot 7,000lbs sculpture featuring the world’s first Hip Hop comic book character, Rappin’ Max. The sculpture to be housed at 585 Exterior Street for one year, will be gifted to the City of Paris where Break Dancing for the first time ever, was included as a sport in the Paris Olympic Games. Rappin’ Max’s permanent location will soon be the Place de la Bataille-de-Stalingrad square in the 19th arrondissement of Paris.
Last year, the Borough President celebrated the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop that brought in luminaries including, Flavor Flav, Chuck D, April Walker, Melle Mel, Caz, Pete Nice, Paradise Gray, MC Sha Rock, and others.
