Wakefield community advocates, Community Board 12 and Councilman Andrew Cohen celebrated the launch of the ‘District 11 Community Activist of the Month’ award with the inaugural honor presented to a Wakefield parks activist Audrey McAllister on Tuesday, October 25.

Cohen noted McAllister first became involved with his district office through the Participatory Budgeting process suggesting improvements to parks and served as a budget delegate.

McAllister proposed improving Wakefield Playground inspiring Cohen to partner with Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. to allocate $2.2 million in capital funds, $950,000 from Cohen, for the project.

McAllister is the founder of the Friends of Wakefield Playgroup and volunteers her time maintaining the playground.
