Council Member Rafael Salamanca Jr. (D-17) and District Leader Freddy Perez Jr. hosted the second part of the Annual Longwood Festival/El Festival de Longwood in the heart of the South Bronx on Saturday, Sept. 7.
There were a multitude of live performers at this festival, which was free and open to the public. Among those who entertained the large crowd on hand were “El Rey Supremo” Luis Vargas Y Su Orquesta, Hip Hop Jibarito Y Su Orquesta and “El Canario” Jose Alberto Y Su Orquesta. El Cacique served as the emcee for the event, while DJ Baron Lopez performed a DJ Set.
Taking place on Longwood Avenue, between Beck and Southern Boulevard, the festival ran from 12-7 p.m. More than 1,000 Bronxites braved the rain to take part in the festivities, enjoying the live Salsa and Bachata music.
“Despite the forecast predicting heavy rainstorms, I was excited to see so many Bronxites turn out for Part II of our Annual Longwood Festival,” Salamanca said. “Musical festivals like this one are not only about enjoying good music, they also serve as an opportunity to embrace and celebrate our diverse culture here in the South Bronx. It is important that we pass on our traditions to our children and to future generations, and we are very lucky to get that opportunity to do so through salsa and bachata music.”
The Hispanic Federation, Ponce Bank, HOGAR and Montefiore Einstein co-sponsored this year’s festival.
