Council Member Kristy Marmorato announced Thursday that she has secured $4 million for repairs to the City Island Library that will go toward overhauling the building’s HVAC system, repairing the roof and various upgrades.
Marmorato called the investment “a long-overdue step in the right direction.” She also called for continued investment in local libraries, which was recently put to the test as the city’s public library system faced the threat of over $58 million in proposed budget cuts.
Marmorato voiced her concern in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on June 12, a “Digital Day of Action” for New Yorkers to rally against the cuts. “We need the NYPL and all of its services fully intact throughout our community!” she posted.
Mayor Eric Adams later restored the funding in the FY25 budget — and as Marmorato presented the community with the $4 million check on Thursday, she said, “Standing with The New York Public Library against proposed cuts was essential, as these spaces are invaluable for children, caregivers, and the entire community.”
“Public libraries are the pillars of our communities, and they deserve the city’s full investment,” said City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, whom Marmorato credited with helping to secure the funding. “This investment will have a lasting, positive impact on residents in the Bronx, ensuring that our library spaces are safe, accessible, and comfortable for staff and patrons alike.”
The City Island branch, first established in 1903, has been in its current location in the center of the island since 1970 and underwent a major renovation in 1997. No timeline has yet been provided for the construction.
