City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito joined Councilman James Vacca in Pelham Parkway on Tuesday, August 26 to announce the kick-off of a week-long City Council food drive. From Monday, August 25 to Friday, August 29, 33 City Council members held drives, with the collected foodstuffs being donated to food banks and soup kitchens. This comes after a $1.32 million council allocation to provide hunger relief. Vacca held the food drive in Pelham Parkway in honor of Mother Teresa’s 104th birthday. Local relief agencies near there, like the Bronx Jewish Community Council Food Pantry, should benefit.
