A pedestrian in his 40s was struck and killed by an unlicensed driver early Monday morning on the Major Deegan Expressway, near the Macombs Dam Bridge in the 44th Precinct, police said.
The crash occurred around 1:50 a.m. on Sept. 2, when the driver of a 2008 Toyota Rav4 plowed into a pedestrian.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found the unidentified man unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was later pronounced dead. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.
A preliminary investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad revealed that the pedestrian was attempting to cross the Major Deegan Expressway from east to west when he was struck by the driver traveling southbound. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 43-year-old William Day of Yonkers, NY, remained at the scene.
At approximately 3:58 a.m., following further investigation, Day was arrested and charged with attempted aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree and attempted refusal to take a breath test, authorities said.
Police have not yet released additional details, and no further information was available regarding whether the pedestrian was in a designated crossing area at the time of the crash.
The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
