A Bronx man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the brutal 2020 murder of his mother, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced today.
Michael Marte, 33, of Clinton Avenue, was convicted of second-degree murder following a three-week jury trial. Bronx Supreme Court Justice Alvin Yearwood handed down the sentence on Jan. 31.
“The defendant got into an argument with his mother and then killed her in a particularly gruesome manner before fleeing to California,” Clark said. “He will spend decades in prison for his heinous actions.”
According to the investigation, in the early morning hours of November 28, 2020, Marte argued with his mother, 59-year-old Teresita Rosario, inside their home. The confrontation escalated when he stabbed her in the neck, strangled her with a cord, and placed a plastic bag over her head.
Surveillance footage showed Marte leaving the residence at 4:30 a.m. and getting into an Uber. He then traveled to John F. Kennedy International Airport and boarded a flight to California. Authorities apprehended him months later, extraditing him back to New York in June 2021.
